Terms & Conditions
Last updated: 16 September 2026
Welcome to Beacon Reading. My aim is to make reading support positive, effective and enjoyable for every child. These terms explain how tutoring works and what you can expect when working with me.
About Beacon Reading
Beacon Reading provides online phonics and reading support for children through small-group and individual tutoring sessions.
By booking tutoring with Beacon Reading, you agree to these Terms & Conditions.
Booking and Payment
Tuition is purchased in advance in blocks of 10 sessions.
Payment for a block must be received before the sessions in that block begin. Your child's place is confirmed once payment has been received.
When approximately six sessions from the current block have been used, I will invite you to purchase the next block of 10 sessions. Purchasing another block is optional. If you would like your child to continue, payment for the new block should be made before the current block ends.
A regular session time or group place cannot be guaranteed beyond the end of a paid block unless the next block has been booked and paid for.
The price of each block will be clearly shown before payment. If prices change, you will be told in advance and the new price will apply only to future blocks that you choose to purchase.
Sessions
Please ensure your child joins their session on time and is in a suitable environment where they can focus and participate.
Parents and carers are responsible for providing a suitable device and reliable internet connection. A whiteboard and pen, or paper and pencil, are useful but not essential, as the main focus of sessions is reading.
I encourage parents and carers to sit with their child during sessions where possible, particularly when their child is younger or may need help with technology. This also gives you an opportunity to become familiar with the teaching methods and language used during sessions, so that you can support your child's reading in the same way between sessions.
Group Sessions
Group sessions take place at the scheduled time and continue when individual children are absent.
Your child's place is reserved for them for the duration of their paid block. Because the group session goes ahead whether or not an individual child attends, missed group sessions are not normally rearranged or credited.
If your child misses a group session, I will provide information about what was covered and, where appropriate, activities or resources to help them catch up.
Children attending group sessions are expected to behave respectfully towards others and allow everyone to learn. If a child's behaviour repeatedly prevents the group from learning effectively, I will discuss this with their parent or carer and work with them to find an appropriate solution.
If Beacon Reading has to cancel a group session, it will be rearranged or carried forward and will not count as one of your 10 sessions.
Individual Sessions
If you need to cancel or rearrange an individual session, please give at least 24 hours' notice.
With at least 24 hours' notice, the session can normally be rearranged or carried forward and will not count as one of your 10 sessions.
Where less than 24 hours' notice is given, the session will normally count as used because that time has been reserved for your child. Where exceptional circumstances arise, please contact me and I will consider these individually.
If Beacon Reading has to cancel an individual session, it will be rearranged or carried forward and will not count as one of your 10 sessions.
Holidays and Planned Breaks
Beacon Reading offers tuition during school holidays as well as term time.
Group tuition: Groups continue during school holidays unless Beacon Reading tells you otherwise. If your child will be away, please let me know. Their place in the group will remain reserved and the missed session will count as one of their 10 sessions. I will provide information about what was covered and, where appropriate, activities or resources to help them catch up.
Individual tuition: If you know that your child will be away or would like to take a break, please let me know in advance. Your remaining sessions can be paused and resumed when you return.
Regular individual session times will be held where reasonably possible, although a particular time cannot be guaranteed following an extended break.
14-Day Cancellation Right
When you purchase tuition online, you will normally have the legal right to cancel the contract within 14 days of purchasing a block of sessions, without giving a reason.
If you would like tuition to begin during this 14-day cancellation period, I will ask you to expressly request, via the checkbox on the booking page, that Beacon Reading starts providing tuition before the cancellation period has ended.
If you make this request and then cancel within the 14-day period after some tuition has already been provided, you may be charged an appropriate proportion of the agreed price for the tuition that has already taken place. The remaining amount will be refunded in accordance with your statutory rights.
You can exercise your right to cancel by emailing ali@beaconreading.co.uk with a clear statement that you wish to cancel. You do not have to give a reason.
You may also use the cancellation form provided with your booking information, although you do not have to use the form to exercise your right to cancel.
Nothing in these Terms & Conditions affects your statutory consumer rights.
Safeguarding
The safety and wellbeing of children is a priority at Beacon Reading.
Parents and carers remain responsible for their child before and after online sessions and should be available or contactable as appropriate for their child's age.
Any safeguarding concern will be dealt with in accordance with Beacon Reading's safeguarding procedures and relevant legal obligations.
I hold a current Enhanced DBS certificate.
Progress and Outcomes
Every child learns at their own pace. Teaching will be adapted to your child's needs and progress.
Although Beacon Reading uses evidence-informed approaches to support children's reading development, specific outcomes, assessment results or rates of progress cannot be guaranteed.
I will keep parents and carers informed about their child's learning and will discuss any significant concerns or recommended changes to their support.
Resources and Materials
Resources provided by Beacon Reading are for the personal educational use of the child and their family unless otherwise stated.
Beacon Reading materials must not be reproduced, distributed, published or sold without permission.
Data Protection
Personal information will be handled in accordance with the Beacon Reading Privacy Policy.
Changes to These Terms or Services
These Terms & Conditions may occasionally be updated. Any changes will apply to future bookings rather than changing the terms of a block you have already purchased, unless a change is required by law.
If there is a change to session prices, you will be told before purchasing your next block.
