About Beacon Reading

Ali - Tutor and Founder of Beacon Reading

I am a qualified teacher with over 20 years’ experience in primary education, with a particular focus on Reception, Year 1 and Year 2.

I’ve spent most of my career in small primary schools teaching mixed-age classes. This meant teaching children at very different stages of their reading journey – and a lot of phonics every day! Over the years, teaching reading has become the part of my work I’m most passionate about.

As a Reading Lead, I became deeply curious about what happens when learning to read doesn’t go smoothly. Why do some children race ahead with phonics while others become stuck? What barriers are holding them back? And, most importantly, how can we remove those barriers and help them become confident readers?

I love the problem-solving side of teaching reading because it allows me to guide children from uncertainty and struggle into confidence, fluency, and a genuine love of reading.

Beacon Reading can help your child to read confidently through a programme designed to close gaps, develop phonics skills and improve fluency.

MY TUTORING METHOD

  • Close-up of colorful lowercase letters on an orange background, spelling part of the word 'abc'.

    Phonics

It all starts by learning the code to decipher words using letters and associated sounds.

  • Dark blue star on a yellow background.

    Fluency

Next, you’ll be able to decode at a glance and read whole words so quickly that the text starts to have meaning.

  • Yellow heart shape on a teal background.

    Comprehension

The last step? We learn to think about the meaning of the whole sentence as we read quickly. This is what opens doors to a whole new world of meaning!
